March 22, 2021 – Upcoming Events, Opportunities & Resources

From the Advisor:

Hi everyone,

I know this section is usually written with an objective tone and systematic approach about how to be strategic in your career development. And I promise I’ll return to our regular programming in the next newsletter. However this week, I want to be deliberate about the emotions and heaviness that has affected me and my fellow brothers and sisters in the Asian American community given the rise of hate crimes in this nation (new window) as well as the shooting that occurred in Atlanta last week (new window).

Honestly, it would have been easy to put on a mask and keep my head down for the sake of professionalism. However, I believe sweeping these incidents under the rug only perpetuates the model minority myth and other false beliefs of racial equity for Asian Americans. Furthermore, I hope that confronting these topics head-on will remind those affected that you are not alone in your grief and spread greater awareness of what life can look like for all historically oppressed communities.

Please take up time and space for yourselves to process, to grieve, to get upset, and to take action, in whichever order comes naturally. We have resources to support you as you do so (new window). Reach out and take care of each other; we are all in this life together. There is much work to be done but I’m hopeful that change is possible.

As a side note – I’ll be out of the office the week of March 29th and will resume one-on-one appointments when I return on April 5th, so this week is your last opportunity to ask any last minute questions before then. This newsletter will also be moving to a biweekly schedule moving forward as recruiting events are beginning to slow down for the semester. As always, feel free to drop a line if you need anything.
