Networking Tips

A number of students have been asking how to stand out when talking to an employer as well as what are the “right questions” they should ask.

When you’re networking during a coffee chat and/or an informational interview, you should have two primary goals: (1) foster a relationship with someone in the firm and (2) determine the fit of the role, the firm, and/or the industry to your expectations and priorities

In this instance, “the right questions” are the ones that will help you accomplish the above goals and grant you deeper insight into the kind of role that you are seeking. This could include questions such as (but not limited to):

  • What have been some of the meaningful projects that you’ve taken on since working at this firm?
  • How did your firm stand out to you among the many others when you were recruiting?
  • What kind of person does well in this industry? What skills, abilities, and personal attributes are essential to success?

Allow the answers to these questions to shape your explanation as to why you’d be a good fit for the industry and why you like the firm. Use this narrative when it comes to constructing a cover letter or in an interview.

At the end of the day, people can distinguish questions that are asked for the sake of being asked instead of sincere, genuine interest. So try not to worry about coming off as the most impressive or knowing everything there is to know about a company. Instead, have confidence in what you bring to the table and share about what makes you excited.

Don’t underestimate the power of simply being an engaging conversation partner who demonstrates an eagerness to learn; it will take you pretty far.
