Business: What you need to know about diversity programs
February 15, 2021 – Upcoming Events, Opportunities & Resources
From the Advisor:
Happy President’s Day everyone!
You may notice that in the Events section of my newsletter, I highlight a variety of different diversity-based and leadership programs from different firms, notably those in the financial services industry. These programs have different titles (Insight, Leadership, Discovery, etc.) but they mostly operate the same way. Their goal is twofold; they want to increase the workforce diversity within their industry, and hope to encourage those who are underrepresented to consider applying. The second is to provide an opportunity for you to gain concentrated exposure to their firm, beyond attending a simple information session.
These programs are generally 1-2 days in length and will include avenues for you to learn about the firm while also pairing you with a mentor. Most importantly, many of these firms will offer an accelerated interview process for a summer internship at the end of the program.
So if you see any that are applicable to you, I encourage you to apply! They are definitely competitive, but if you’re accepted, it facilitates your recruiting process greatly. If you’re not eligible to apply – don’t worry! You can absolutely successfully recruit through traditional methods.
On another note, I wanted to encourage you all to explore the companies in attendance for our annual Government, Education & Non-Profit Career Fair (new window) this upcoming Friday. Although this may not be the sector many of you are interested in, you may be surprised to find business-related and/or consulting-adjacent opportunities within the firms and organizations that will be in attendance. Think tanks, non-profits, and government agencies all provide valuable industry experiences that can set you apart.
As always, feel free to drop a line and/or make an appointment through Handshake (new window) if you have any questions!
