Baseball may not seem relevant to today’s job market, but stay with me on this one.

In May of 2019, the Washington Nationals (baseball team) had a win — loss record of 19 — 31. That means in the first third of their season, they had won 19 games and had lost 31. They were on track to be the worst team in baseball and the season had barely begun. Fans called for the manager to be fired, sports pundits had written off the team. It was going to be a long season.

Fast forward to November of 2019 and the team won the World Series, the highest honor of baseball.

A turnaround of such magnitude was unheard of. How did the team go from worst to first? The team’s manager asked the team to focus on just today.

Today, go 1—0.

Meaning, just win the day. Just focus on getting today right and the rest of the days will take care of themselves.

Friends, today we are 19 — 31. Illness is spreading like wildfire, the economy is in free fall, and we don’t know what’s going to happen with our jobs/school/plans for the summer, for the rest of the semester, or heck, even in the next hour.

So let’s take a lesson from that turnaround. If we can just concentrate on winning the day, or even winning the hour – together – the next hour and next day will take care of itself.

So each day, take some time to breathe, to focus on the moment, and to reach out to someone, even if it’s just for a chat. And if that someone happens to be at the Cawley Career Center, know that we are still here conducting drop-ins and appointments (new window), here to support you and to help us all through these weird and difficult times, even if the conversation is not job related. Most of us in the Center have been through a recession before. We might just have a few nuggets of wisdom to share.

But in any case, today, just go 1-0.
