Letter from the Advisor: Virtual Interviewing Tips
Virtual interviewing has been a trend prior to the coronavirus hitting the U.S., but now more than ever, you will want to perfect this interviewing technique. Since your recruiting timeline is a bit delayed in comparison to consulting and finance, some of you may just be starting the interviewing process. Have you conducted a video prescreen interview yet using HireVue or a similar platform? How did it go? Did it feel awkward because it lacked the human connection? And yet, perhaps you appreciated that you could interview at 8pm after your day was finished vs. trying to find a time that works with the recruiter’s schedule. There are definitely pros and cons to this interviewing tactic. Regardless, more and more organizations have started using virtual interviews as a means to connect with a greater number of candidates in less time, in addition to the need right now to social distance. Therefore, you will want to be prepared when you receive this interview request. Most interview tips still apply. Here are a few tips to consider specifically when conducting video interviews.
- HireVue themselves told us their research found if a candidate clicks on the link to “learn more about the interview” prior to starting, they perform better. If you see that option, take it!
- Keep in mind that companies choose how many times you can respond to the set interview questions. Some companies give you one time only, some a few chances, and some will let you keep trying until you feel pleased with your response. Be ready for all scenarios.
- Your emotions, facial expressions, language patterns, and word choices are all being scrutinized. Make sure you enunciate your words, try not to stutter, and avoid long pauses. Be natural and conversational in your responses; show personality vs. coming off as robotic.
- Ensure good lighting and a professional (or blank) background.
- Practice, practice, practice!
You don’t have to be interested in investment banking to learn from the tips shared in this article. As always, you are welcome to meet with us virtually for interviewing tips or even practice a question during drop-ins. We also offer mock interview appointments via Handshake.
