Tech & Analytics: Alum Spotlight + Great Events
October 14, 2020 – Upcoming Events, Opportunities, & Resources
Alejandra Martin Lopez (SFS’20): Member Experience Operations Associate
How did you find your current position? Mirror is a company that had been on my radar for a while, so I was always looking for job opportunities with them. Once I saw a position I liked, I applied and reached out to a fellow Hoya alum that was already working there for her to give me more insight in to the company etc.
What does a typical day or week look like and/or can you briefly explain tasks involved in your work? In my work I help triage issues our members may have. This typically involves a lot of logistics work between our Members, third party companies we work with and internal stakeholders. In a typical day I respond to any Member communications as well as working with internal teams to streamline work flows.
What surprised you the most when you started working? When I started working I was most surprised at the amount of responsibility I was given immediately upon starting. Due to the nature of working at a start up, the work is very hands on, so you can really see the direct impact of the work you are doing.
What are the best ways for students to learn more about your industry and/or stay aware of trends in your industry? For work in a tech startup such as this one, one of the best ways to be on top of this industry is to be active on social media and other similar platforms, so you can really get a pulse of what is happening. I also recommend checking in LinkedIn and searching jobs by the industry you are interested in and connecting with any alums who might work in an industry or company you may like.

Gen Zers Say Silicon Valley Is Elitist and Exclusive. Can They Build a New System?
Source: NY Times
For young people, breaking into the cutthroat tech industry — or any industry, really — has become far more difficult during the pandemic. In-person networking events and club meetings are on hold; there aren’t many online hubs for informal connection; and the investors and founders whose buy-in can make or break a product are harder to reach. Read more (new window) to learn about how a group of young tech enthusiasts are carving their own path on Discord. For those without a NY Times account, click here (new window).
