ALUM Spotlight:  Michael O’Neill, Founder of GetWellNetwork

Following treatment for non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, Michael O’Neil emerged humbled and inspired to finish the graduate studies interrupted unexpectedly by cancer. In the final year of his JD/MBA program at Georgetown University, Michael launched GetWellNetwork (new window) in August 2000 to tackle an unaddressed problem in healthcare: empowering patients to take control of their healthcare journey. Today, he leads the global digital health company, GetWellNetwork, as founder and CEO.  Michael shares the skills and roles he believes are in most demand in this healthtech industry.
What skills are most needed in the healthtech industry?
Healthcare is first and foremost about humanity, and a lot of those “soft” relational skills carry through into healthtech. From strong communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills to the ability to work well with internal teams across all disciplines, knowing how to engage and empathize with others will get you far. There’s also the necessity of dreaming big, both in terms of an attachment to a company’s mission and the ability to take a concept from sketch to final implementation. These skill sets can separate good from great. And, in an ever-changing technology and healthcare landscape, the resourcefulness and flexibility to continually adapt can be a huge benefit for candidates, employees, and companies alike.

What roles are in most hiring demand at tech companies such as yours?
Here at GetWellNetwork, we’re fueled by our passion to revolutionize healthcare. Doing this takes a special combination of curiosity and inspiration, backed by the hard work of advancing patient-centered engagement. These skills are needed now more than ever. With that in mind, GetWellNetwork is looking for talent particularly in the following areas:

  • Product managers
  • Software developers
  • UX/UI engineers
  • Marketing managers

Michael will speak more in his career journey, GetWellNetwork, and careers in the healthtech sector on Monday, November 2nd, at 5pm.  RSVP here (new window).
