FROM THE ADVISOR:
Hello Hoyas!
I’m often asked about the recruitment timelines in the health and science industry. However, there’s no straightforward answer because tech hiring doesn’t follow a strict structure like consulting and finance. Here are two critical factors that impact timelines.
Company Size: The recruitment timeline varies depending on the size of the company. Larger companies tend to start recruiting in the fall, especially if they have a more robust university campus recruiting program. Mid-sized companies often post positions in early spring, while smaller NGOs and startups typically begin their search for candidates in late spring.
Variability of the Industry: The health and science fields exhibit considerable variability, making it challenging to pinpoint a specific timeline for this industry. However, the majority of application deadlines tend to fall during the spring. If you’re interested in consulting, certain government agencies, or larger companies in biotech, pharmaceuticals, or health insurance, your primary timeline is in the fall. But for most, the recruitment process unfolds during the spring. Hospitals, clinics, government agencies, universities, and nonprofits, not to mention smaller and mid-sized companies across all sectors, typically initiate their search for candidates in the spring.
The deadline for those of you applying to fellowships and service opportunities usually falls in early spring. For instance, most sites with the NSF Research Experiences for Undergrads (REU) have deadlines between January-March while NIH recommends applying 3-6 months before your desired start date. However, numerous internships and job postings become available in the middle to late spring. Doctors without Borders (note: a large nonprofit) requests applications for summer internships to be submitted by May 1.
In summary, you can typically find internship and job opportunities between August and May. Additionally, keep in mind that full-time positions, including entry-level roles, become available throughout the year as people leave organizations for new opportunities. I advise setting up job alerts for the organizations you have an interest in when their website permits it, as well as setting up a saved search on Handshake, so you don’t miss out on a deadline.
