November 11, 2021 – Upcoming Events, Opportunities & Resources

FROM THE ADVISOR:
This newsletter, I’d like to highlight some opportunities.  First, The Lightfoot Academy  is a program put on by the law firm Lightfoot, Franklin & White LLC.  Per their description, “The week-long program is open to rising seniors in college seriously considering law school, as well as incoming law students interested in becoming trial lawyers.  The program takes place June 6–10, 2022, in Birmingham, Alabama and provides an opportunity to learn from skilled trial lawyers and understand how a litigation firm operates.”  The firm is seeking 5–7 individuals and will pay for all travel, lodging, and meals over the course of the program.

Second, the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund is seeking applicants for its Marshall Motley Scholars Program .  As Marshall Motley scholars, successful applicants will receive the following:

  • A full law school scholarship for tuition, room and board, and incidentals to alleviate the debt burden that can prevent future lawyers from pursuing a career as a civil rights lawyer;
  • Summer internships with national and regional civil rights organizations with offices in the South focused on racial justice to jumpstart training in civil rights law;
  • Two-year postgraduate fellowship at civil rights law organizations in the South fighting to achieve racial justice; and
  • Access to special trainings sponsored by LDF and the National Academy of Sciences.

For information on the application process, click here .

Finally, the Capstone Journal of Law and Public Policy at the University of Alabama  has put out a call for papers for a volume to be published Spring 2022.  This is a chance to achieve a journal publication as an undergrad.  The upcoming volume will feature pieces dedicated to exploring the ways COVID-19 altered the legal landscape, but the journal is also accepting essays on any subject relating to law or public policy.  Papers can be sent to the journal’s email address (capstonejournal@gmail.com ) or submitted online .  Questions can be directed to the Editor-in-Chief, Katie Kroft (knkroft@crimson.ua.edu ).

I hope you’re all enjoying fall!
