Hello Hoyas!

Many of you are still making plans for the summer, and let me just say, there is plenty of time to still plan so please do not stress.  You are welcome to make an appointment with me via Handshake to talk through options, including internship search strategies, if an internship is your goal.  In addition to using Handshake, I recommend this search for IT-related or this search for analyst internships (virtual).

A meaningful summer may not include a formal internship.  Perhaps you just need to make money.  Go ahead and take that lifeguard, retail, or babysitting gig!  Perhaps you want to focus on studying for the GRE. Perhaps you are burnt out and want to binge on Netflix. Do what serves you best. Remember, you are a student first, so employers and admissions committees are not going to question “gaps” in your resume. Here are alternative ideas to spend our summer break beyond the typical internship plan.

  • Work on a Short-Term Project. Check out Parker Dewey for shorter, unpaid projects.  There are a few tech-related projects on the site right now, including a data analysis, data visualization, low code app builder, and web development project.
  • Work on a Personal Project. Get ahead of your senior thesis or junior research project; write a blog with content you are passionate about (topics could range from climate change to machine learning); and/or work on a personal programming project such as a weather app or food log.
  • Refresh your Career Development Skills and Documents. This includes updating your resume, Handshake and LinkedIn profiles; preparing for behavioral interviews, technical interviews, and case interviews; preparing for graduate school by studying for exams and researching programs to apply; and networking with professionals. 
  • Participate in Hackathons. Companies often plan hackathons for college students so watch for these, and you can find a general list of hackathons on Major League Hacking, EventBrite and DEVPOST. Check out 18 active data science hackathons here.
  • Take a Course / Learn Something New. Take courses to learn/enhance a soft and hard skill(s).  Coursera and LinkedIn Learning offer an array of courses. I found the courses, Applied Data Science with Python and Intro to Git and Github, on Coursera.  Improve upon your project management skills, a foreign language or a soft skill with LinkedIn Learning.  Also, check out this list of Ivy League free courses.
  • Volunteer. My go-to sites to find volunteer work or projects are Idealist.org, volunteermatch.org, catchafire (66 projects using IT, web, and data skills),and allforgood. Below are a few highlighted organizations and opportunities in tech and analytics. Of course, you may want to volunteer in a completely different area of interest to explore your curiosities, and that works too.
    • Work on an open source project found on Github awesome-for-beginners. This article shares 8 projects in 2022 for beginners to try.
    • Learn how to code while also building an app that solves real problems that nonprofits face with Free Code Camp.
    • Use your data or project management skills to tackle social issues like poverty, global warming, and public health with DataKind.
    • Train others in technology to overcome poverty with Right Here at Home.
    • Tutor children in math with School on Wheels or Heart Tutoring.  Teach kids to code with the organizations, Codivate or code.org.
    • The Center for Social Justice created a list of DC specific sites to volunteer during the height of COVID-19. They are still relevant if you feel connected to D.C. and prefer serving this community.
