FROM THE ADVISOR:
To paraphrase the Bard, “To pre-law or not to pre-law, that is the question.” Luckily, this isn’t an overly demanding choice to make in terms of real-world commitments. “Pre-law” is essentially just a label for anyone interested in attending law school at some point after graduating. Unlike pre-med, there are no particular course requirements in order for someone to be a competitive law school applicant. Rather, law schools seek out class diversity in a litany of different respects, including major, course history, and professional and extracurricular experience. Don’t think you have to be a certain major, take certain classes, or pursue certain internships or club affiliations to be a competitive applicant. Pre-law is mostly a state of mind, an intentional stance. The only guiding advice that you should keep in mind are (1) get the best grades you can and (2) get the highest LSAT or GRE score you can. These two metrics are the core components of law school applications and the main things you should bear in mind as you undertake your undergraduate studies. Other than that, pursue what you find interesting and fulfilling and you’ll set yourself up well for an eventual law school application cycle.
If you decide to consider yourself pre-law, be aware of our many resources available to help you achieve your goals. Foremost, be sure to consult our Pre-Law Guide for specific guidance on every part of the pre-law experience and law school applications. We have webpages and video tutorials devoted to the key parts of law school applications. In addition, I’m here to answer questions via email or meetings and to review your documents. You’ve already taken a helpful step in advancing your legal ambitions by signing up for this newsletter, but make sure you take advantage of the aforementioned additional resources.
