STUDENT SPOTLIGHT: Annika Lin | COL ’24 | Economics & Computer Science

What activities did you participate in while attending GU that you found the most valuable and why? Some activities I found useful were participating in the Carroll Round Steering Committee (CRSC) and HoyAlytics. In HoyAlytics, I developed my data analytics skills through learning and teaching Tableau, a data visualization software. As a data consultant, I used Excel and Tableau to clean data and present recommendations to our nonprofit clients. Describing my experiences as a Data Consultant and Director of Curriculum in HoyAlytics was particularly helpful when interviewing for data analytics summer internships.

Please share your most recent internship experience. I interned with Kaiser Permanente’s Mid-Atlantic Permanente Medical Group on the Advanced Analytics and Data Science Team. I found this opportunity by googling “Tableau Visualization Summer 2022 Intern.” I used a combination of open source and proprietary Python packages in combination with Tableau to develop a significant repository of analytical visualizations to help my team present and explain sophisticated machine learning models to technical and nontechnical audiences. I wrote code following software development best practices and transitioned three projects off to permanent members of the team, leaving them with documentation and operative code.

What surprised you most when you started your internship? I was surprised by how little supervision I was given. My work was primarily remote (flexible work hours with a daily check-in meeting), and I was allowed a great degree of freedom in terms of how I wanted to accomplish my tasks and which skills I wanted to develop over the span of my 12-week internship.

Thank you, Annika, for sharing your internship experience!

All the best,

Tech Women, Where Did You Go?

Source: Better Programming

This article focuses on the exodus of women from the tech industry. According to a recent study by Accenture, half of women who begin their careers in tech end up exiting by the age of 35. The article attributes this to a variety of environmental factors, including the devaluing of soft skills in tech, women taking on more “office housework,” and women hiding behind humility. The author’s advice is for women to “be conscious about what tasks you fill your week with; these weeks become your career. Wear your humility with pride, but leave self-criticism at the door.”
