Government and Non-Profit – Upcoming Events, Opportunities and Resources

From the advisor:

Be who God meant you to be and you will set the world on fire;
— St. Catherine of Siena

Dear Seniors,

You made it! Through what has been, arguably, one of the strangest times to be a college student ever. From coming on campus your first year, only to be sent home and learning remotely for what seemed like years on end. Adapting to a world back in person, masked and socially distanced. Your perseverance shouts to the world that you all have what it takes to go out and make your mark on this world – in big and small ways.

I mean, I don’t want to pile on with words of wisdom and advice – you’ll get plenty of that. Oh and platitudes. Be prepared for that, as well. Instead, I just wanted to leave you with a few quick tips:

  • You still have access to the Career Center. That’s right – you heard it here first. You can come back to meet with us at any time – well provided we have Handshake appointments posted. Peace & good luck on finals!
  • Join the Georgetown Alumni Association (new window). What better way to grow your network than among those who share your love for the Hilltop? Especially in the public service sector – Hoyas are crazily connected.
  • Seek out professional associations. Are you a teacher? A lobbyist? Working on the Hill? An economist? The list goes on – but likely there is an association for your new field. Check out a few cool ones: Young Professionals in Foreign Policy (new window)Washington Association of Professional Anthropologists (new window)Rotary (new window) International, the list goes on.
  • Join a fun sports leagueKickball (new window), anyone? Seriously, even if you never played past recreational sports, most cities have really fun leagues you can join for just about any sport from Bocce, to the infamous Pickleball, or a local Hash House Harriers  (new window)group. You meet fun people and get your body some exercise!

You’ll notice, perhaps, a theme in much of the above and it’s about going out and meeting new people. Or, networking, as many people call it. The fact is that there is a big exciting world out there beyond the gates on the Hilltop. And while it is intimidating, it is incredibly rewarding to explore.

I wish you all the best in your adventures, Hoyas!

Beth

ps – All non-seniors, please know we will have appointments over the summer! I have some vacations planned, but be sure to always check on Mondays to see what is available. These newsletters will also shift to monthly.

Article of the Week
Three characters reading books with the title "Summer Reading"

Reading for Fun!

All year long I’ve put interesting articles and links here for you to pursue at your leisure. And that is the key, huh? At your leisure – not something you see much during the school year. Thankfully, the summer months are often different. This summer, I encourage you to read but read for fun. I always love the suggestions Goodreads has – and they have a great summer reading guide (new window).
