How I Got There: Amelia Fattore, MSB, 2018 | VP, Private Credit Financing at Citigroup

Amelia Fattore graduated from Georgetown University’s McDonough School of Business (MSB) with a Finance and Accounting Degree. During this interview, Elizabeth shares about her Georgetown career experiences that led to her current position as Vice President of Private Credit Financing at Citigroup. Learn how Georgetown shaped her path, how she got to her current position, and more insights about breaking into the financial industry.

What did you study in your time at Georgetown? And can you walk through the process of how you got to your current position?

I studied both Accounting and Finance in the business school during my time at Georgetown. After realizing my accounting-focused internship during my junior year summer wasn’t a long term fit, I chose to re-recruit in the fall of my senior year for a new full time position. At this point, I had taken a meaningful amount of the classes for my Finance major and realized my interest in the space. During and after Citi’s firmwide presentation on campus, I was able to connect with numerous alums who helped educate me on the wide variety of opportunities Citi had to offer and shared their positive experiences with me. I ultimately accepted an offer within the capital markets division and have been at Citi for 6+ years now.

What activities/extracurriculars at Georgetown did you find most valuable and why?

My involvement in Blue & Gray and NSO afforded me unique opportunities to develop public speaking skills while also learning to work in groups with individuals from diverse backgrounds. While involvement in these organizations was motivated by my school spirit and enthusiasm (rather than pre-professional interests), the skills learned are directly applicable to my professional role today. 

What does a typical day look like for you?

I spend a majority of my time analyzing leveraged loans made to middle market firms across a variety of industries (including business services, consumer services & products, retail, healthcare) both quantitatively and qualitatively. Items examined include the company’s historical financial performance and projections, investment highlights, risks and mitigants, and industry dynamics. I spend my remaining time analyzing portfolio performance on a broader level and identifying key trends.  

What skills are most needed in your current role?

Enthusiasm to learn, attention to detail and resourcefulness are three key skills for this role.

What is your advice to students interested in applying for a position at your organization?

Take advantage of opportunities presented at the beginning of your career to begin building your professional network and deepen your understanding of the industry (and the particular areas you are interested in pursuing opportunities in). Being able to articulate why you are passionate about a role will allow you to stand out from other applicants.
