During this interview, Genevieve shares about her Georgetown career experiences that led to her current position as an Investment Banking Analyst at Barclays. Learn how Georgetown shaped her path, how she got to her current position, and more insights about breaking into the investment banking industry.
What did you study in your time at Georgetown? And can you walk through the process of how you got to your current position?
I majored in Business and Global Affairs during my time at Georgetown, alongside minors in Philosophy and Art History. My home school was the MSB where I got early exposure to business topics. Since I was interested in getting more depth in the finance industry early on, I got involved with some of the clubs on campus including the Georgetown University Student Investment Fund. There, I met amazing upperclassmen who helped guide my job search process. In the end, it was the people and the experiences I was able to get at Barclays that led me to intern my junior summer at the firm. After interning, I received and accepted a full-time offer.
What activities/extracurriculars at Georgetown did you find most valuable and why?
I think my experience in the Georgetown University Student Investment Firm and the Georgetown University Alumni and Student Federal Credit Union helped prepare me the most professionally for a career in finance. I also really enjoyed my time volunteering with Hoya Taxa, a volunteer group that does taxes for low-income individuals and families. Not only was the work fulfilling, but taught me a lot about responsibility and leadership. Finally, my time as a mentor in the business school pre-orientation program BUILD taught me the importance of paying it forward and teamwork.
What does a typical day look like for you?
A typical day includes responding to emails, taking notes on meetings, working on presentations for clients. Depending on the day, I may have some modeling work.
What surprised you most when you started working in your current position?
I was most surprised about the responsibility and trust you are given as a first-year analyst. Being able to work in materials that will be sent to important clients allows you not only to develop your skill set, but also your professional confidence.
What skills are most needed in your current role?
I think having an analytical mind that prioritizes attention to detail is key to the role. Time management and organization are also extremely important.
What is your advice to students interested in applying for a position at your organization?
I think Barclays is special because of its emphasis on culture. Take a chance to get to know people at the firm; they want to help you!
What are the best ways for students to learn more about the industry?
There are great online resources to learn more about the industry. I also highly recommend reaching out to upperclassmen or recent graduates about their experience breaking into the industry.
Any additional career development advice or other information that you’d like to add?
It can feel overwhelming at first to start considering/networking for jobs. Take it day-by-day and stay organized. Before you know it, everything will become more clear in what place will be the best fit for you. Don’t underestimate the importance of culture!
