October 13, 2021 – Upcoming Events, Opportunities & Resources
Hello Hoyas! A few resources and gentle nudges below.
For students with disabilities, Beth Schill, an advisor at the Career Center, is hosting appointments to discuss navigating careers as a person with a disability. You can make an appointment to see her here. Be sure to fill out your profile on GU’s new inclusivity website.
For students seeking gap year opportunities or contemplating a teaching career, our Postgraduate Service Opportunities in Education Fair is THIS FRIDAY and features 7 of our top recruiters. This is part of CSJ’s Education for Liberation week which has amazing events.
For students who RSVP to events and don’t attend (yep, that’s almost all of you, and every now and then, me too, regrettably), we are trying to get the word out as employers, staff and students-alike are struggling with counting on RSVPs to have some meaning as we all plan events. Please note an RSVP is not a signal of interest; it is a commitment to attend. In other words, let your yes mean yes, and your no mean no. Be a person of your word. An accurate projection of the number of students at an event helps both our employers, alumni and fellow Hoyas. If you can no longer make the event, please go into the event on Handshake (or wherever you RSVPed) and click the “Registration” button. This will remove you from the list of attendees. Decide if you can really attend before hitting that RSVP button from now on.
All the best,

Article of the Week
How to Cancel Plans at the Last Minute Professionally – and Without Burning Any Bridges
The author first recommends not saying yes if you aren’t positive you can make it. Of course, things do come up and you are busy, so how do you cancel in a professional manner? This article shares advice and sample templates for various scenarios. The author also recommends changing your RSVP to “decline” if it was an online RSVP, as someone else I know (me) recommends (above).
