How did you find your current position? A recruiter reached out to me on LinkedIn!

What does a typical day or week look like and/or can you briefly explain tasks involved in your work? A typical week is filled with various short and long term analytics requests. I work at an early stage start up so work is very fast paced, and I could have several different projects in flight. A request can range from fixing a bug to building a new dashboard to building a new company-wide metric for use. I spend about a third of my time in meetings taking those requests and scoping them properly, and then the other two thirds executing those tasks alone or in partnership with another analytics team member.

What skills are most needed in the industry and/or job you work? The ability to see the birds eye, high-level view of a problem and break it down into something granular. Often, I get a request that is general so I use my knowledge of the business and the available data to give an accurate, data-driven answer. This itself encompasses many skills – being able to bubble up key insights from lots of noise, communicating with others who you are working with, and attention to detail during the execution process.

What are the best ways for students to learn more about your industry and/or stay abreast of trends in your industry? My favorite newsletter is Health Tech Nerds (previously Kevin’s Weekly Health Tech Reads) and Rock Health to see what companies are getting funding and get a curated perspective on what is happening in the industry.
