Hello Hoyas!

The news is mixed when it comes to hiring within the tech industry. I will continue to keep you informed.  If you haven’t heard yet, the tech industry has been on a partial hiring pause. Crunchbase lays out what’s happening with some FAANG and larger-brand companies and has compiled a list of companies making layoffs. Why is this happening? Tristan Bove, editor for Fortune, explains that the tech industry experienced growth by 4.4% over the last decade, which was 3x the rate for the rest of the economy. This growth was only enhanced by the pandemic when demand for tech products surged. Eventually, however, the pendulum had to swing the other way–tech stocks generally do not fare well in uncertain economic times as investors turn to gold. Supply chain issues and the war in Ukraine add to this uncertainty. Tech companies overextended themselves during the boom. They hired a lot of workers, for example, and now they need to slow down. There still appears to be a hiring commitment from tech companies, but the approach has shifted over the past few years. Jerome Ternynck, CEO of SmartRecruiters, describes this shift as a transition from growing at all costs to growing efficiently.

In other good news, software engineers are still in demand (see below)! Moreover, there are plenty of tech companies recruiting this fall. We have companies like Appian and Cognizant attending the career fair and hosting information sessions. And right now, there are 1,294 full-time jobs and 471 internships on Handshake listed under the IT and Internet & Software industries. Hiring is still happening (albeit a bit slower), so don’t write the tech industry off yet.

Software Engineers Still in Demand

Despite layoffs happening throughout the tech industry, there’s a silver lining for software engineers: They’re still in demand. In fact, demand is soaring in many industries – like healthcare, for example – that have catapulted into the digital era since the start of the pandemic.
