Technology and Analytics – Upcoming Events, Opportunities and Resources

Hello Hoyas!

It’s officially summer break! I have big hopes that you are relaxing in some way (or all the way).  Here are a few fun facts and updates for you.

I love hiring stats by the National Association of Colleges and Employers. Did you know that 57.6% of interns are converted to full-time hires? Internships offer valuable opportunities to acquire skills, gain industry knowledge, and secure a post-graduation job. Interestingly, the significance of GPA in the screening process has diminished over time. In 2019, 73% of employers considered GPA to screen applicants, but now only 37% do so. Although specific details are not provided by NACE, it often implies that a GPA of 3.0 or higher is sought after. If your GPA meets or exceeds this threshold, it is advisable to include it on your resume.

In tech news, layoffs and freezes continue. According to the layoffs.fyi tracker, 702 companies and almost 20k employees have been laid off. Yet, DevOps.coms shares positive results in a survey conducted by Linux Foundation of 418 hiring managers in tech. This survey found that while 59% of hiring managers changed or revised technical hiring plans for 2023 due to economic uncertainty, a total of 68% will still be hiring with 44% planning to increase their hiring of technical talent. Hiring managers are specifically looking for experience in cloud/container technologies, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence/machine learning, database and data management, and advanced analytics and data science.

Are you interested in a remote internship during the school year? Prepare yourself for the upcoming application period in July for the Virtual Student Federal Services Program. This program offers remote internships in the federal government, requiring a commitment of 10 hours/week throughout the academic year. Numerous internships are available that specifically utilize technology and analytics skills. If you are eager to get started, the first step is to build your federal resume on usajobs.gov.

All the best,
