September 3, 2021 – Upcoming Events, Opportunities & Resources
From Jacki Banks, Arts, Media & Communication Advisor:
It is wonderful to see the campus alive again. It truly feels like fall, not only because YOU are here but because your timeline questions are back! If your roommate is moving through a fairly structured recruiting process, you might be wondering….
“Am I late? Early?” Depends on the industry. But you are here for arts, media and communication, challenging industries with variable deadlines at the best of times. And that’s the key. Timelines are variable. For example, The Washington Post has opened its Summer 2022 Newsroom Internship program, but Spotify has yet to announce their application dates for their Global Summer Internship program. The Late Show with Stephen Colbert hasn’t even thought about summer; they’re just opening their Spring 2022 Internship Program. Meanwhile, for you December graduates interested in entertainment/talent agencies, United Talent Agency has a vague ongoing review process for its Agent Training Program.
“With all these variable timelines, what do I do?” Research employers you are interested in, use a Google sheet (or Airtable, if you’re fancy), and put in each employer and their timelines (according to the information on their website.) At the same time, reach out to alumni working at those companies to learn more about what they do and any advice they might have. (Check out our networking and informational interviewing guides for tips and tricks!)
“So, who IS hiring?” As I write this sentence – September 1st at 2:00pm – there are 11.7K full-time roles and 4K internship positions listed on Handshake. (PLEASE complete your Handshake profile; employers are looking for you just as much as you are looking for them.) Handshake also has a monthly employer report: 500 Companies Hiring Students on Handshake Right Now.
“Um, that’s a lot. (And, btw, I think my heart stopped there for a second.)” I know. It is a lot. If you can remember nothing else, remember this: We offer drop-ins Monday – Friday, 1pm – 3pm, and individual appointments for industry guidance, general career exploration, and practice interviews. (Check HERE for details.) There’s no question you can’t ask. We are HAPPY to accompany you on your career journey. (It’s what we do, and we like it.)
Take care, Jacki
