Dear Hoyas
While virtual interviewing was definitely a thing in The Before Times, the pandemic has pushed just about all interviews online. In fact, many times candidates don’t even meet their future bosses and teams in person until the first day of work.
With that in mind, please keep these tips in mind to ensure that your virtual interview is a success:
- Dress for the job you are applying for. It’s tempting to go casual for interviews; afterall, they can only see you from the shoulders up. However, dressing up for an interview does two things: first, it shows the interviewer that you are serious about this internship or job. Two, it puts you in the right frame of mind for interviewing.
- Keep the background neutral and/or neat. If you are interviewing in your room, be sure beds are made and clutter is cleared away. Ask roommates to leave and turn off your phone. Worried about interruptions? The Cawley Career Center has interview rooms that you can reserve for free; just email careercenter@georgetown.edu with the to reserve your space today.
- Monitor your facial expressions and body language. Because virtual interviews are so face-focused, it’s easier for interviewers to read your facial expressions when you are stumped, tired, annoyed, or just stressed about your interview. Do some deep breathing before your interview to ensure you are relaxed, and also make sure you are sitting up straight and looking into the camera as you speak.
Want to practice your virtual interviews? All Georgetown undergrads have access to Big Interview, a platform offered by the Cawley Career Center that allows you to practice your virtual interviews. You are also welcomed to sign up for a mock interview with a Peer Advisor on Handshake.
