September 12, 2021 – Upcoming Events, Opportunities & Resources

Dear Hoyas,

This week’s ProTip is about career fairs.

Annual Fall Career Fair – Friday, September 17, 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m

Our biggest career fair each year is oh-so-creatively called the Annual Fall Career Fair. This year it will take place virtually** on Handshake on Friday, September 17 between 10:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. You do not have to attend for all 5 hours; when you register you will be asked to sign up for specific time slots with employers, so you’ll know ahead of time who you are speaking with and when.**

Regardless of year or major, all students are invited to register.

This is our largest annual event which will feature nearly 75 employers, including Ambra Health (Internet & Software), Capital One, Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, Defense Intelligence Agency, International Rescue Committee (Non-Profit), Peace Corps, Sheppard Pratt Health System, T. Howard Foundation, Teach For America, Wavestone (Consulting).

Registrations are required and you must also register for specific employer time slots within the fair itself on Handshake. See below for further instructions.**

Other Details

Dress: business casual for the portion of you that will be on-screen.

Video Background: If you can clear your background of messiness, that would be helpful (make sure your bed is made and dishes are out of the way)

Topics of Conversation: This is your opportunity to find out about the participating firms, what they have open, and what you should know about them. You should be prepared to speak about yourself, but this is your chance to interview them! 10-minute conversations go quickly.

We hope to see you there!

In pre-pandemic days, (a.k.a. The “Before Times”) we hosted large, in-person career fairs each year. These were events at which employers would stand behind tables set up in the Georgetown Hotel ballroom (where you now get your COVID tests). Students dress up in suits only to pile into a hot room to stand in line to speak to employers.

Unfortunately, the pandemic has forced us to rethink all of our employer events, but we have figured out how to conduct career fairs virtually. And good news! No more crowded rooms or sweating in suits.

To speak to employers, you must register for the fair itself AND for time slots with employers. The set up is more like a day of coffee chats with employers rather than wandering around a big, hot room.

How to Participate:

1) Register for the Annual Fall Fair here

2) Sign up for specific employer slots. Scroll through the employers; those employers who have already set up their schedules for the day will have buttons with times on them. Some will have 30-minute information sessions (a one-way presentation during which the employer speaks and you listen) as well as 10-minute, one-on-one conversations. Click on any button to add yourself to the employers’ schedules.

3) Log on to Handshake on the day of the event! Navigate to the fair, click on the button that says, “Your Schedule” and follow your schedule for the day from the comfort of your own space.
