November 21, 2021 – Upcoming Events, Opportunities & Resources

Hey Hoyas,

Finally, Thanksgiving Break is right around the corner! While we know that this is a much needed respite from everything going on at school, we also know that talking to your parents/families at home about career plans can be stressful and daunting.

Just a few tips to keep in mind when approaching the dinner table discussion with your folks:Like any conversation, make sure to acknowledge the other parties’ opinions. Your parents may make suggestions about what they think is best for you, and while you may not be interested in their suggestions, let them know that you hear them and will consider their opinions in your search.Remember that you know how best to communicate with your parents/families better than anyone else. You know what you value in a career, your parents’ values, the kinds of questions they might ask, how best to communicate with them, and what career choices are worth standing your ground. Keep these in mind!Lastly, don’t put too much pressure on the conversation. Your career path and journey will not be determined over one conversation, and just because a certain career path is brought up does not mean that you’re tied to it. While it may be difficult in the moment to disagree with your loved ones on career choices, remember that everyone has their own perspective and won’t always agree on everything (and that’s okay!).
Career Center Drop-Ins
If you need support through these conversations or have career questions in general, stop by during drop-ins. Next week, we will have virtual drop-ins available on Monday, 1-3pm and Tuesday, 10-11am and 7-8pm. Following Thanksgiving break (Monday, November 29), we will resume our normal in-person drop-ins Monday to Friday, 1-3pm and virtually Tuesday & Thursday, 10-11am and 7-8pm.

If these times don’t work for you, schedule an appointment with a staff member. For any other questions or to cancel/reschedule an appointment, drop us an email at careercenter@georgetown.edu. Have a happy and restful Thanksgiving Break, Hoyas – you deserve it!
