LETTER FROM THE ADVISOR:
Welcome back to Georgetown! I hope your fall semester is off to a smooth start. I often get asked about recruiting timelines in the health and science industry. However, there is no simple answer as recruitment in these industries is not as structured as the consulting and finance industries. Here are a few aspects to keep in mind when it comes to timelines.
- First, it very much depends on the size of the organization. The larger the organization, the more robust their university recruiting strategies and the more likely they will start recruiting in fall. For example, large companies such as AstraZeneca and Mercer, start posting positions in August and September. And while a few companies may start interviewing in the fall, many more will wait until January before even starting to interview candidates. The recruiting process may extend into late spring. Mid-size organizations are more likely to post positions in January and February, with small nonprofits and startups likely to start looking for candidates in March or April.
- Second, the variability of the health and science fields is wide. Many of you are seeking gap year experiences, ranging from research to service opportunities to paid clinical experiences. Some of you are interested in working for a hospital, healthcare insurer, university, think tank, nonprofit, or a government organization, all of which timelines vary. For most of you, the recruiting process will take place in the spring. As examples, the NIH IRTA programs asks that you apply 3-6 months prior to start date and Doctors without Borders (note: a large nonprofit) posts internships in Jan/Feb. However, for those applying to fellowship and service opportunities, applications can be due as early as December. And for those of you interested in consulting, the application process starts now for larger consulting companies but later for boutique firms.
In summary, it is not a black and white answer because recruiting activity varies widely by the industry and company size, not to mention the role you are seeking. And remember: people leave organizations all the time for other jobs and those positions (some being entry-level) will need to get filled when this occurs. Start by creating an advanced search (or multiple) on Handshake and then save that particular search in order to receive notifications for newly posted jobs or internships that fit your criteria. Also attend drop-ins and/or visit with an industry advisor to discuss job and internship strategies beyond Handshake.
All the best,
